Facebook blocks hundreds of anti-Bobi Wine pages

NUP leader Robert Kyagulanyi

Hundreds of Facebook accounts that have specifically been posting attacks on National Unity Platform (NUP) and its Presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu woke up to messages that their accounts are blocked for compromising community standards.

Although the blocked accounts are over five hundred, it is believed they are run by just a few people conducting anti-NUP propaganda and coincidentally, pro-government communications.

On its community standards, Facebook says in order to maintain a safe environment and empower free expression, they remove accounts that are harmful to the community, including those that compromise the security of other accounts and FB’s services.

“We have built a combination of automated and manual systems to block and remove accounts that are used to persistently or egregiously abuse our Community Standards,” the tech company says in its community standards portal.

The nearly 500 affected Facebook pages were also inclined towards supporting the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Presidential candidate Yoweri Kaguta Museveni by posting and reposting his posts, achievements, but also his campaign slogan “Securing your future”.

Some of the accounts that have been pulled down include Duncan Abiga, the Director Government Citizens Interaction Centre (GCIC), Chimp reports  and its manager Giles Muhame’s account.

Others are Ashburg Kato a socialite and blogger , Jennifer Full figure an ardent NRM supporter , Mzee Isma, Patrick Ocaido, Dickens Okello, Kampala Times, Robusto Communications and a page named Cecilia Ogwal which is not at all managed by the Dokolo Woman MP and also Andrew Mukasa aka Bajjo’s accounts.

Several of the affected persons have raised concern on the different social media platforms they are in.   According to Duncan Abigaba, the Director GCIC they woke up to many pro –Government accounts  blocked and they have tried to appeal but it has been denied by Facebook.

Abigaba says that he has tried to open another Facebook account and is now trying to send people friend requests.     According to Abigaba, it seems it is political that their accounts have been attacked; adding that they have information that people against the Presidential Candidate Museveni could have reported them for their posts.

Abigaba says the pro Government team, were only campaigning for Museveni.

President Museveni’s senior press secretary, Don Innocent Wanyama confirmed that several of the pro-government accounts have actually been “attacked” but referred URN to Ministry of Information and Communications Technology to find out what exactly happened.

Journalist Patrick Ocaido who has been running his Facebook account for 12 years said that he was shocked to wake up hoping to post, but on to find that he cannot access his account and it has been blocked.

He says it could be political, especially that we are heading to elections.

Of the pulled down accounts, this reporter has received three requests from people who have been affected.

Dickens Okello, who has often posted pro-Government posts on his Facebook and in some cases bashed NUP and its supporters says the target could be whoever was posting a lot and defending the government.
