Fire has gutted Rukoki health center IV in Rukoki Sub County Kasese district destroying property worth millions of Shillings. The fire broke out in the health center on Thursday morning.
The affected departments includes drugs in the ART clinic, beds and mattresses in the maternity ward. Patients in the maternity ward were evacuated to health facilities in Kasese town.
The health facility management blames the fire on an electric circuit that started from a freezer in the ART clinic.
Rukoki health center IV is one of the biggest government health facilities in the district, offering free specialized services including obstetric emergencies in Busongora North, Busongora South and Kasese Municipality.
Dr. Joyfred Kayiri, the In-Charge of the health center, estimates that they have lost property worth over Shillings 200million.
“ We have lost properties worth shs 200 million , fire also destroyed other items including freezers, computers and office documents,” he said
Kayiri has called on the government and partners to help the facility re-establish the ART clinic that serves more than 300 clients.
Dr. Yusuf Baseke, the Kasese District Health Officer, says that the incident is a big blow to health services in the district. He calls for immediate action by the Ministry of health to restore the facility.
Isaiah Tumwesige, the town clerk Kasese municipality, says that they will erect tents in the meantime to ensure the continuity of services especially for ART patients.
He says that they are also in touch with the district to ensure the clinic is restocked and partition the immunization section to improvise for a maternity ward.
Jordan Bwambale, a resident of Rukoki who participated in the rescue efforts indicated that they evacuated 15 patients from the maternity ward.
The Rwenzori East police spokesperson, Nelson Tumushiime said by Thursday afternoon that investigations are still ongoing to confirm the cause of the incident.
