Five players have been nominated to compete for the FUFA Airtel 2021 Best male Football player of the year Award.
The nominees were revealed today during a function held at the Stonehaven Malcolm X Hotel, Kololo.
The local soccer governing body-FUFA together with the sponsors Airtel Uganda launched the 6th edition of the awards that are intended to recognize the outstanding football personalities of the year 2021.
The Awards ceremony will take place on December 4, 2021, at Speke Resort Munyonyo.
The five nominees for the best male player award include; Yunus Sentamu who was the top scorer in the Uganda Premier League with 16 goals last season, Erick Kambale who guided Express to their first silverware in almost a decade and also scored 15 goals in the league.
The others include two players that were part of the U-20 players that played up to the final of the U-20 African Cup of Nations, these include Bobosi Byaruhanga and Aziizi Kayondo.
URA FC skipper Shafik Kagimu who led URA to finish second in the league is also among those nominated.
According to FUFA, the players nominated were voted by the head Coaches and captains of the clubs playing in the Star Times Uganda Premier League.
FUFA also nominated five female players for the FUFA Female Player of the Year 2021.
The players nominated for the award includes who won the FUFA Women’s Super League title with Lady Doves Daisy Nakaziro and Fazila Ikwaput.
The other include; Margret Kunihira from Kawempe Muslim Ladies FC, Joan Naggayi from She Maroons FC and also Fauzia Najjemba from Kampala Queens FC who is the captain for the U-20 Women team.
In total, 13 categories will be considered during the Airtel FUFA Awards 2021 ceremony.
Other categories listed include Coach of the Year, Women Football Coach of the Year, Beach Soccer Player of the Year, Airtel-FUFA Best Eleven for Men, FUFA Best eleven team for women, Futsal Player of the Year among other categories.
The last edition of the Awards in 2020 were not held because of the challenges brought about by COVID-19.
Former KCCA FC player Alan Okello won the 2019 Award and Crsted Cranes Juliet Nalukenge for the best female player of the year.
Edgar Watson, FUFA Chief Executive Officer thanked the sponsor for making sure the Awards take place.
He pointed out that the Awards are a big motivator for the players to work hard when they are on pitch both at club level but also when they are summoned at the national team.
FUFA First Vice President Justus Mugisha thanked Airtel for embracing the idea of rewarding football personalities, adding that this will help local football develop.
Manoj Murali, Airtel Uganda Managing Director thanked FUFA for the efforts of grooming young talents and exposing them by creating several opportunities that enriches them with experience in the sport.
Airtel Uganda is the leading sponsor of the Awards with a a package of 100 million ugx.
The other sponsors include Eco bank, NIC Holdings, Nivana, Pepsi among others. The best male and female player will each walk away with a brand new car
