The Police in Jinja are holding Twahir Damulira, the programs manager and news anchor at Baba FM, a privately owned radio station in Jinja city, eastern Uganda.
Damulira’s crime is his Saturday Morning political talk show, Council Yaife, on which he hosted presidential aspirant and Kyadondo East legislator, Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine.
The security had advised him against hosting the pop music star who has turned into President Yoweri Museveni’s leading challenger.
Damulira, who is locked up at Nalufenya Police station, was reportedly picked up from his home in Walukuba village on Wednesday night.
He has been denied access to his family and lawyer. Journalists from various media houses stormed Nalufenya police station on Thursday afternoon to establish circumstances surrounding their colleague’s arrest but they were turned away and directed to seek permission from the police spokesperson in vain.
A police officer who spoke on condition of anonymity since he isn’t authorised to speak to the media, said Damulira hasn’t recorded a statement.
“I only discovered that he is a journalist this [Thursday] morning. They brought him in the night and he hasn’t eaten anything,” he said.
“Neither has he recorded any formal statement, actually our commanders are shying away from pressing charges against him,” he added.
Albert Amula, the Baba Media Group Manager told journalists that he held a meeting with the Regional Police Commander, Dauda Higira who informed him that he wasn’t aware of why Damulira was arrested.
Higira declined to comment about the matter. The Kiira Region Police Spokesperson, Abbey Ngako confirmed Damulira’s arrest together with five others whose identities he didn’t disclose.
