LDU shoots journalist dead

A para-militia attached to the local defence unit (LDU) has been identified as the gunman who pulled the trigger on the former president of Uganda Journalists Association (UJA), Robert Kagolo.

Kagolo was shot dead last evening at the home of his late brother in Kasengejje, Wakiso district.

Kampala Metropolitan deputy spokesman, Luke Owoyesigyire identified the LDU man as Rashid Mamuli who has been guarding the home of Kagolo’s brother, Samuel Musiitwa, who was kidnapped and killed a few days ago.

Musiitwa’s lifeless body was discovered on Wednesday, and as the family went for burial, they asked for security to guard the leading to the deployment of LDUs one of whom killed Kagolo.

According to police preliminary findings, Mamuli opened fire at Kagolo who was banging the gate asking them to open for him after suspecting that unknown people were following him.

However, the LDU personnel refused to open for him, resulting in a scuffle.   Kagolo died on the way to St Joseph Hospital in Wakiso.

According to Owoyesigyire, a joint team of the Police and the army arrived at the scene and arrested Mamuli.

Kagolo was a news editor at the government owned Star FM and a current affairs programme presenter.
