Police in Greater Masaka area are investigating circumstances under which three more people were attacked and killed by unknown assailants.
Police have identified two deceasedpersons as Ibrahim Ssebwana, residents Byanyiri Village and Erias Kiweewa, a business man in Kyazanga Town -both found Lwengo District.
The third victim’s name is yet to be established Muhammad Nsubuga, the Southern regional Police spokesperson confirmed the latest killings ,saying all have occurred in a space of three days.
“The deceased persons were attacked by unknown assailants who we are hunting for. These assailants usually beat or cut their targets using machetes during the curfew hours,” Nsubuga said during an interview on Wednesday
The latest killings bring the number of people killed by machete-wielding thugs in the districts of Sembabule ,Lwengo,Masaka and Bukomansimbi since July 22 to eight while 13 others have been sustained serious injuries .
Mr Nsubuga said police have so far arrested 17 people in connection to the killings.
“Among the suspects include a witch doctor from Byangiri Village whom we suspect has knowledge about the latest incident that happened in the area on Monday,” Nsubuga said .
Archileo Ssemwogerere, the chairperson Kibona Village in Lwengo District has asked the government, to do thoroughly investigations and arrest all those behind these heinous acts.
“Our people are living in fear and we really don’t know the intention of the attackers, “he said
Police have downplayed reports of having a rebel group operating in the area as earlier leaflets dropped in Bukomansimbi indicated ,insisting that these are hard-core criminals who were earlier arrested on related criminal offences ,but later released by court on account of lack of incriminating evidence against them .
The latest attacks on residents in Masaka Sub region bring back ugly memories of night attacks on people’s homes by machete–wielding thugs between 2017 and 2018.Between 2017 and 2018, dozens of murder and robbery cases were registered in the greater Masaka sub region.
The attackers would send prior notices warning to attack residents.A joint security operation later led to the breakup of a notorious gang coordinated by Musa Ggaliwango and the late Muhammad Kiddawalime who was killed bya mob in Bukulula Trading Centre in Kalangu District during a foiled robbery.
