Man Burns Self over a Woman
For some time, 40-year-old Edgar Kyamunywa has been making advances to a woman in his neighbourhood but failed to impress her. Overtaken by the pain of rejection, Kyamunywa threatened to burn himself in front of the woman’s gate at Masanafu near Kampala.
On Wednesday night, he proved that he meant his word when he set himself on fire in front of the woman’s gate.
However, his children managed to put off the fire and rushed him to Kiruddu Referral Hospital in critical condition.
Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson, says detectives from Old Kampala Police Division were called in and have since commenced investigations to ascertain what prompted the attempted suicide.
Kyamunywa’s children say, their father has been threatening to burn himself in front of the gate of a woman who has rejected his advances in favor of a boyfriend.
According to the police, this is the second incident of this kind within a week.
Recently, a man in Natete attempted committed suicide after killing a woman for rejecting his sexual advances. Abdul Kalegeya, a barber stabbed to death 40-year-old Sarah Kamwaka, a resident of Mbawo zone in Lubaga division in Kampala.
He reportedly attacked the deceased in a bar where she was staying and stabbed her to death. After killing the deceased, Kalegeya set himself ablaze.
On July 27, another man allegedly chopped off his girlfriend’s hand, for rejecting his marriage proposal in Nabooti village in Nakatsi sub-county in Bududa district.
The suspect waylaid the 16-year-old girl on the path to her parents’ home around 9:00pm and chopped off her right hand.
