The Entebbe Chief Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday sentenced a 24-year-old man to two years in jail for attempting to defile a minor.

Appearing before the Entebbe Chief Magistrate Juliet Nakitende, Amon Muhangi was convicted after he pleaded guilty to the charge.

According to State Attorney Janet Kitimbo, Muhangi met the victim at her father’s bar in Kajjansi town council in March and lured her to a nearby coffee garden where he attempted to have sexual intercourse with her.

The victim was saved by a woman, who sounded an alarm. Muhangi fled but was arrested a day after.

Kitimbo told the court that a two-year jail term for Muhangi is sufficient enough for him to realize the gravity of his action because several youths are committing crimes under the influence of alcohol and other substances.

She added that the court must not be lenient on such convicts so as to protect children, especially the girl child.

Ndahura supported Kitimbo’s proposal of a jail term of two years, saying his client is still young, is a first-time offender, is remorseful, and may reform and become useful in society upon release.

The same court also sentenced a 24-year-old man Henry Mayombo, to two months of community service at Kajjansi Market after pleading guilty to defiling a 17-year-old girl.

Chief Magistrate Juliet Nakitende ordered that Mayombo pays Sh 500,000 to the victim’s family as compensation. He is required to work daily for two hours under the supervision of Kajjansi market chairman Joseph Katende.

His lawyer Edward Ndahura prayed for community service since Mayombo had pleaded guilty to having unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl under 18 years.

The incident happened in February at Kasuku cell, Kajjansi town council.

Ndahura asked the court to be lenient on Mayombo since he did not waste resources and time, is a first-time offender, and is also remorseful for his actions.

Juliet Namugga, the victim’s mother asked the court to release him since he had accepted to take full responsibility for her daughter who is currently pregnant and also has to take care of his aging parents
