A police officer attached to Iriiri Police Post is on the run after irregularly releasing a suspect on police bond.
Sergeant Joyce Alioro reportedly released a prime suspect irregularly on Saturday after a burglary and theft offence at Kapuat Primary School in Napak district where thieves stole 58 mattresses and other property kept by the pupils at the school when schools closed due to the covid-19 pandemic.
Sgt. Alioro, the officer in charge of the Family and Child Protection Unit reportedly acted upon her own authority to irregularly release a suspect only identified as Aguma, a key suspect in the case.
Aguma has since gone on the run to dodge the charges.
And just a day later, the police officer who released the suspect on bond has also gone on the run, now classified as Absent without Official Leave.
But reports show that Alioro was tipped off that she was due for arrest on Sunday, then decided to go without leave.
Michael Longole, the Mt. Moroto Police Spokesperson says the officer will face the charges of aiding the escape of a suspect. She is to face the Police Disciplinary Court once she is apprehended or returns on her own.
Police are encouraging school administrators to maintain presence and vigilance so that wrong elements do not take advantage of the absence of thin presence of staff to steal school property.
Spokesperson Longole believes the continued presence of at least some teachers at school will always decrease instances of burglary and theft targeting schools.
For the last 18 months, schools have been closed and there has been the minimal presence of teachers in some of the schools in the rural setting, sometimes giving advantage of some unscrupulous persons to break into the school premises.
Paul Lokol, one of the parents, wonders how the suspects were released immediately instead of taking them to court for sabotaging education in the area.
“Karamoja is said to have very low literacy levels compared to other regions and we have moved to embrace education,” said Lokol. “Government should protect the schools, children and their property so as to uplift education.”
