Security Heightened at Makerere

Security forces have deployed heavily at Makerere University following a fire that destroyed the institution’s main building.
The fire broke out shortly after midnight, and it took police firefighters nearly eight hours to put it out.
By 8am, the police and personnel from President Yoweri Museveni’s elite guard force – the Special Forces Command (SFC) had deployed at the university, giving an indication that the president was planning to visit.

According to the vice-chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, Museveni has been monitoring the developments at Makerere from the time the fire broke out.
“He has been calling almost every after an hour, asking for updates,” Nawangwe told journalists but could not state clearly that Museveni was on his way to the university.
Most offices on the building were burned down including the human resource department where staff records were kept.

Nawangwe however said that there is no cause for alarm since all information had been digitally stored.
The police in a statement said that they “are actively investigating” the cause of the fire to ascertain its exact cause.
