The body of Sheikh Abbas Muhammad Kirevu who was killed by security operatives has finally been handed over to the family after two days by police.
Sheikh Kirevu who has been the Imam of Masjid Jamia Gangu a resident of Gangu B in Busabala-Makindye Ssabagabo Division, Wakiso District, was gunned down in Katereke-Nsangi Kyengera Township, at one of his homes in the wee hours of Thursday.
After his killing, Police said Sheikh Kirevu was killed by the joint counter-terror task teams when he violently tried to resist arrest, forcing security to put him out of action.
Fred Enanga the Police spokesperson, said security teams had gone to arrest Kirevu after getting information that he was recruiting people to join the Allied Democratic Forces-ADF, a rebel movement based in the Democratic Republic of Congo which has been accused of being behind the recent spate of bombings in Kampala.
Police had declined to handover the body to the family for burial arrangements, saying some processes were to be followed.
Ibrahim Abas Ayubu Kirevu a brother to the deceased, told Uganda Radio Network at the mortuary moments after receiving the body, that they were informed that they had to get two letters from the Kateleke-Nsangi zone chairperson, and another one by Area DPC also approved by Police Pathologist Dr Moses Byaruhanga who was not available the entire of Friday.
He said they waited until they received a call from Dr Byaruhanga, informing them to pick the body without even presenting the letters they were asked at first that frustrated their earlier burial arrangements.
He however, she says four other family members are still being held by security in unknown places including the deceased’s two wives.
Hajji Umaru Sebayiga, an uncle to the deceased, disputes security claims that their son was part of the rebel groups that is bombing Kampala. He questions why a suspect in handcuffs was gruesomely murdered.
In pain, Ayubu Kirevu questions why security agencies arrest and then kill someone before conducting thorough investigations on suspects.
According to family, Sheick Abbas Muhammad Kirevu will be laid to rest today at Nkowe Muslim cemetery in Wakiso District along Hoima Road
