Egypt is the champions of the 2021 All Africa Mixed Team Championship that climaxed at the MTN Arena, Lugogo this afternoon in Kampala.
The Egyptian team beat Algeria 3-1 in the final to win gold, while Uganda and South Africa who lost out at the semi-final stage settled for bronze medals.
The Algerian team started well after the pair of Koleila Mammeri and Tanina Violette Mammeri beat Egypt’s Ahmed Salah and Jana Ashraf 21-15, 21-9 in the mixed doubles.
But Egypt’s Doha Hanny made sure her team made it 1-1 when she defeated Halla Bouksani 21-17, 21-18 in the women’s singles. Egypt’s Adham Hatem Elyamal later fought back strongly to defeat Mohamed Abderrrahime Belarbi 21-17, 17-21, 21-19 to win the men’s singles.
Egypt’s women’s doubles team of Nour Ahmed Youssri and Doha Hany made sure the team won gold when they defeated the Algerian pair of Mounib Celia and Tanina Violette 22-20, 21-13.
William Kabindi, the Ugandan coach said he was happy that his team stopped favorites Mauritius at the quarter-final stage. “We played well as a team and now we need to focus on the individual events starting on Tuesday,” added Kabindi.
The closing ceremony of the Championship that attracted nine nations was graced by the President of Badminton Confederation Africa (BCA), Michel Bau, and Chairperson of the Uganda Badminton Association (UBA), Annet Nakamya among others.
On Tuesday the All Africa Badminton Individual event will start at the same venue and will climax on October 28th.
