The Uganda Cubs have qualified for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) for the U-17 category.
In-form Oscar Mawa scored the lone goal to guide Uganda Cubs to a 1-0 win against Djibouti in a semi-final match played this afternoon at the on-going Zonal Afcon U-17 qualifiers in Rubavu, Rwanda.
The surprise package Djibouti side who made it to the semi-final for the first time played a highly defensive game giving Uganda’s strikers no chance to shoot easily at goal.
Djibouti earlier had Soultan Soultan and substitute Khalid Ali come close to scoring.
But Mawa who has showed his sharp goal scoring instincts picked a neat pass after 89 minutes to place the ball past Djibouti’s goalkeeper and ably man of the match Osma Youssouf. It was Mawa’s sixth goal of the tournament.
It was all tears for the Djibouti team after the referee blew the whistle to end the match. “We tried our best, but the pressure was too much on the defense. But we are happy to reach this far in the tournament,” said Djibouti’s coach Mohamed Ali Affasseh after the game.
“ I am happy we have achieved one goal of qualifying for Afcon 2021. Now we need to battle and retain the title,” said a happy Uganda Cubs coach Hamuza Lutalo at the Umuganda Stadium.
The second semi-final match will see Tanzania face Ethiopia, while the finals will be played on December 22nd. The best two teams in the qualifiers qualify for the Afcon U-17 competition.
