Ugandan bags silver medal at World Deaf Championships

Uganda’s Middle distances runner Jennifer Nyakato on Thursday won a silver medal in the women’s 800m at the ongoing 4th World Deaf Championship in Lublin, Poland.

The star athlete crossed the finishing line in 2:10.26 minutes to confirm her place on the podium. Russia’s Luliia Abubiakirova won the race in 2:08.83 minutes.

Nyakato, an African Champion made a good start in the race as she overtook Kenya’s Bitok to claim the lead, but failed to maintain before Russia’s Abubiakirova outsprinted her to win the race.

On Tuesday Nyakato, Uganda’s only representative at the Championship finished 4th in the 1500m in 4 minutes 47:89 seconds.

The medal is another addition to her medal cabinet following a successful triumph at the Africa Deaf Athletics Championships in 2019.   

Although she ran below her personal best, she remains Africa’s record holder over the 800m distance. Nyakato broke the record at the Africa Deaf Athletics Championships in 2019 where she posted 2:08:3 minutes and won gold.
